Prelude “Pacific Stairs” Tim Small
Leader: Sing to God a new song, for God has done marvelous
things.
People: All the ends of the earth have seen the victory of our God.
Leader: Make a joyful noise to the Lord! Break forth into joyful song and sing praises!
People: God judges the world with righteousness.
Let the earth resound with the praise of God!
-Psalm 98, adapted
Lighting of the Candles and Bringing the Word
Patient and loving God, in our sin we get it all wrong. We see your commandments as burdens, not gifts. We look at the needy and fail to see Christ’s face. We work frantically to earn your favor instead of being still and enjoying your love. We set our hearts on the wrong goals and our feet on the wrong paths. Even our best deeds we do for ourselves more than for you.
Forgive us, gracious and loving God. Cleanse our hearts of all sin, and let the Spirit of Jesus Christ renew us. So may we grow in the gracious knowledge of your love made clear in Christ our Lord.

Psalter Reading Psalm 98
Sing to the Lord a new song,
The Lord of wonderful deeds.
Right hand and holy arm
Brought victory to God.
God made that victory known,
Revealed justice to the nations,
Remembered a merciful love
Loyal to the house of Israel.
The ends of the earth have seen
The victory of our God.
Shout to the Lord, you earth,
Break into song, into praise!
Sing praise to God with a harp,
With a harp and song of music.
With sound of trumpet and horn,
Shout to the Lord, our king.
Let the sea roar with its creatures,
The world and all that lives there!
Let the rivers clap their hands,
The hills ring out their joy!
The Lord our God comes,
Comes to rule the earth,
Justly to rule the world,
To govern the peoples aright.
