About Us

Dr. Matthew Covington

Senior Pastor

Matthew Covington has been the Pastor of The Presbyterian Church of Bowling Green since January 2003. He enjoys the congregation’s variety of ideas and interests. “This is not a gentle world,” he says, “but The Presbyterian Church is a gentle place. Our mutual respect and affection here matters a lot. This is a welcoming and encouraging place”

Matthew and Ann met at Davidson College. They have two daughters, Claire Duren, who lives in Charlotte, NC, and Elizabeth Leverette, who lives in Columbia, SC.

Matthew keeps a hive of bees in his backyard. The bees teach him daily lessons on the order, complexity, and beauty of God’s creation. When the bees sting, it is only an anomaly, a momentary sadness in a world flooded by the goodness of God.

Leslee Kirkconnell

Director of Christian Education

Leslee joined the staff in January 2016 as the Director of Christian Education. A native New Yorker, Leslee attended Maryville College in East Tennessee, followed by a year living in Birmingham, Alabama, where she received her call to ministry. It was her move to the Presbyterian School of Christian Education in Richmond, Virginia, where she met and married her husband, W. Glenn Kirkconnell. Following graduation they moved to Charlottesville for Glenn to pursue PhD studies. Their children, Heather and Ryan, were born in Charlottesville. Leslee accepted a call to be DCE for First Presbyterian Church in Gainesville, Florida. Twelve years of great ministry and then a call to Lilburn, Georgia, serving two churches in the Atlanta area. The Presbytery of Tampa Bay called her to be Resource Center Director and Educator for the Presbytery in 2007. After six years, the Presbytery voted to close the Resource Center and Leslee moved to Davidson, North Carolina to be Interim DCE for Davidson College Presbyterian Church. Along the way she has earned her Certification as a Christian Educator, been ordained a Ruling Elder, done much training in preventing Clergy misconduct and child abuse, helped plan regional and national CE training events and enjoys serving the wider church through the Presbytery.

Leslee loves to garden, read, sew and cook. She and Glenn enjoy taking walks, playing a wide variety of board games, and playing with their four parrots, in addition to keeping up with their young adult children, both of whom are accomplished musicians. She and Glenn recently welcomed their first grandchild, Theo, born Dec. 30 2017 to Heather and Jake.

Dr. Wayne Pope joined our church staff as Choir Director in September 2011. Wayne is a Professor of Music at Western Kentucky University where he teaches voice and directs the opera theatre program.

Wayne holds the D.M.A. in Voice Performance from the University of South Carolina. He is also a graduate of Loyola University in New Orleans, and Murray State University. He is an active recitalist and soloist, and has been featured with numerous orchestras and choral groups. In addition to his baritone voice, Wayne’s “other instrument” is the guitar, which he plays professionally.

The Personnel Ministry and Session were impressed with Wayne’s background in choral music, his interest in multiple styles of music, his acquaintance with the music students and faculty at Western Kentucky University, his previous experience as a choir director, and his sense of call to his work.

Dr. Pope and his wife Beth, who also teaches voice at WKU, have two children, a daughter, Caitlin who graduated from Western in 2008, and a son, Will who graduated from Western in 2014.

David Clarke grew up in a small town off the coast of Northern Ireland called Bangor.
