Buck in A Basket Offering
This is a weekly opportunity to consider contributing $1 during the offering for a particular mission not included in our regular budget. The Mission Committee decides the annual calendar of which projects will benefit. The schedule for 2018 is: January/February: Food Pantry; March: PLC for their 2 Year Old Classroom startup; April: HOTEL INC - repair projects not in our regular contributions; May: Pentecost Butterfly Release (May 20); June: Purchase of additional round tables for Fellowship Hall; July, August, September: RITI for purchase of staple pantry items to be sure we have enough food for our guests; October, November, December: Deacon's Fund - helps with financial needs of members and others.
Our church is committed to an annual mission to provide Living Waters for the World in under-served areas of Central and South America. We have water covenants with five communities in Central America. This mission is funded from pledges, fundraisers, and individual contributions. Contact: Kelly Goad
Food: Church Food Pantry
Food: HOTEL INC's Manna Mart
Our church food pantry serves on average 125 individuals per month, December and January being the most needful. Donated food items need to be non-perishable and easy to open. A collection drawer is located under the stairwell in the 10th Street lobby. We are generally always in need of items - a list is available outside the office. HOTEL INC's Manna Mart is committed to providing nutritionally balanced meals with varied menus. The food pantry provides clients with enough food to sustain them 3 meals a day for 3 days. Manna Mart is supported by food donations from churches, civic groups, businesses, and individuals. A collection drawer for Manna Mart can be found in the church's Tenth St. Lobby.
Every 12th Saturday our church takes its turn with the local Saturday Meals program, a supplement to Meals on Wheels. Volunteers meet at St. Joseph Catholic Church to prepare and deliver more than 250 Saturday meals to local homes. Contact: Brianna Trickey
Bread for the World is "a collective Christian voice urging our nation's leaders to end hunger at home and abroad." Our annual contribution joins other supporters to end the injustice of world hunger.
Habitat for Humanity is building in a new subdivision at the end of East 12th St. Our church participates in three Saturday BUILD dates per year. Since 2011 our church volunteers, ages 15 to 82, have helped build homes for 8 families, with hammers, paint brushes, shovels, and written prayers on unpainted walls. HFH has also partnered with church volunteers on building projects for ailing church members. All funds for HFH BUILDS come from a yearly fundraiser. Contact Susan Thomison
When considering what to do with an old sink, discarded cabinets, or an outdated sofa, think RESTORE as in the Habitat Restore located on Clay Street. Proceeds from items sold at Restore go toward material purchases for Habitat homes.
Uspiritus is an agency that advocates for children through therapeutic foster care, residential living, independent living, transitional living, and prevention services. The agency began as a Presbyterian residential care facility for children in 1849. In 2012 Bellewood united with Brooklawn to form the largest non-profit children and family advocacy and care facility in Kentucky. The Bowling Green Uspiritus office serves children and families in surrounding counties. Forty percent of the $20M Uspiritus budget comes from corporate, church, and individual donors. A portion of the annual Pentecost offering is given to Buckhorn, an Appalachian children's agency, to which the church has strong traditional ties.
Shelter: Room at the Inn
Our church participates in a winter shelter and hospitality program for the homeless that is coordinated through HOTEL, INC. We along with other congregations, offer a safe place to sleep and an evening meal and light breakfast each Thursday evening, from November 20 to March 12. The Bowling Green model for safe winter shelter is taken from The Room at the Inn Program in Nashville, TN. Five volunteer roles -- dinner host, cook, innkeeper/sleeper, breakfast host, and housekeeper -- are available. Contact: David Coverdale
In light of growing concern about devastation from natural disasters, the mission committee began a new initiative in 2014 with two purposes: (1) to provide clean up kits through Gifts of the Heart and (2) to communicate disaster relief information. Gifts of the Heart are kits collected for disaster relief and stored in either Presbyterian Disaster Relief or Church World Service warehouses. Contact: Jan Albert
The Presbyterian Church supplies kitchen items for clients accepted into the transitional housing program directed by HOTEL INC. When a new client moves into the house on Smallhouse Rd. (about every three months), the mission committee puts out a request for kitchen items. Contact: Shannon Dyche
